Swnton Boy Drowned
At an inquest held by Mr. J. Kenyon Parker at Swinton yesterday, a verdict of “Accidentally drowned” was returned on the body of Alfred Kemp Backhouse (9), a schoolboy whose parents reside at 65, Charles Street, Swinton.
On Thursday evening the deceased boy, along with two little playmates named Waller Sutton (9); and Albert Cauwood (6) was fishing, when he fell in.
Sutton ran for assistance, and a stoker from the Swinton Gasworks. John Lockwood, who hastened to the scene, found that the boy had sunk.
He recovered the body with boat hook about ten minutes later. Artificial respiration was tried without effect.
