Swinton and Distress.

Entitled to Representation on Area Committee.

At last night’s meeting of the Swinton Urban Council, the chairman (Mr. J. Kelly) said that Yorkshire had now been classified as a necessitous area to benefit from the Lord Mayor’s Relief Fund.

An area committee was to be formed Wombwell, and Swinton would be entitled to representation on that committee, but only the permanently unemployed would benefit from the scheme under the conditions in force.

Mr. Jagger said that in many cases partly unemployed were worse off than the wholly unemployed. It was decided to call a public meeting in Swinton for the purpose of raising funds in connection with the scheme.

The Council decided oppose application to the licensing justices for an off-licence in Cliff Field Road. During the discussion it was said that was almost impossible for the four or five beer-off licence-holders to earn a living in Swinton and pay their rent.

Mr. Chappell, referring the delay in the clearing of fallen snow, said that the authorities were not to blame and that the responsibility lay with the County Council. Mr. Creighton said that the County Council cleared the snow from the more important places, but seemed to think Swinton was a back number.
