Swinton Too Good for Rotherham

Rotherham Town opened confidently enough in their Whit-Monday match at Swinton, putting 63 on the board for the loss of two wickets, but Briscoe got three wickets sharply to start a trend that culminated in the other eight wickets falling for 22. Barnett (20), and C. Lee (34 not out) were chief contributors to Swinton’s comfortable eight wickets win, and Rogers scored 15 not out. Both the Swinton wickets fell to G. Root, while Rotherham were dismissed by Briscoe (3 for 13) and Ellis (3 for 32). Ellison had two wickets, and two were run out.

Mexborough Bowlers Shine

Padley, the Mexborough bowler, struck excellent form in the home match with Denaby on Whit-Monday, sending six men back to the pavilion for 21, and, ably backed by C. Bayes (4 for 26), sent all the visitors packing for a score of 50, compared with Mexborough’s 111. For Mexborough Hargreaves (32) and Wilkinson (25), made best use of the bat.

Fluctuating Game At Hickleton

In a good game, Hickleton defeated Firbeck at home by 19 runs on Monday. Hickleton, batting first after Firbeck had won the toss, lost their first two wickets for one run, and with only 53 on the board five were down. J. Hutchinson made 29 and J. Riley a quick 24. The ninth wicket fell at 104, and W. Robinson and J. Green, the stumper, put on 36 for the last wicket. Robinson was l.b.w. for 26 and Green not out 13. Firbeck’s opening pair, W. Rodgers and R. Bacon put on 44 before the latter was bowled for 31. Rodgers went on to make 35, Firbeck reaching 100 for six wickets. A double change, Lockwood for Butler, and J. Riley for A. Turner, turned the game in Hickleton’s favour, the remainder of the wickets falling for 21 runs, and the last with 121 on the board. W. Lark (5 for 44) and A. Fragg (4 for 28), bowled well for Firbeck. W. Lockwood finished with 4 for 30 and J. Riley 3 for 52 for Hickleton.

Bright Batting At Denaby

Some bright batting was seen at Denaby on Saturday when the home team defeated Wath by eight wickets. Wath made a promising start but were all out for 107 (Phillips 17, Godfrey 14, Fieldsend 28). The downfall of Wath was due to Vickers (3 for 24), Robinson (3 for 17) and Rossington (2 for 10). Denaby soon made 111 for the loss of two wickets (Cory 33, Robinson 46 not out, Wright 24).

Easy For Hickleton

Frickley were defeated by ten wickets at Hickleton on Saturday. J. Briston (23) and E. Govier (12) were the only Frickley players to reach double figures in a total of 77. Riley took 7 for 40 and W. Lockwood 2 for 27. Hickleton (A. Turner not out 38, Riley not out 23) replied with 78 for no wicket.
