All “Doubles ” at Swinton: A Pleasant Study in Batsmanship
The drawn game between Swinton and Hemsworth on Saturday was a pleasant study in batsmanship.
Eight wickets fell for 456 runs in four hours and 40 minutes, and no batsman was out for less than a double figure score.
Pawson and Morte opened for Hemsworth and with scant respect for pace bowlers, Ward and Bailey, went for runs in an emphatic manner. Scoring at a rate of over a run a minute, they put on 73 for the first wicket before Morte had his middle stump uprooted by Kerry for 38.
With Pawson scoring at a faster rate, Caton and Hibbert came, added their contributions, and departed, leaving Pawson and Kilvington to carry the total from 167 for 3 to the declared total of 245. Pawson’s 115 included 14 fours, Kilvington being not out for 52.
With Swinton facing an almost inevitable draw, some stolid batting was to be expected, but after the dismissal of Cummins, Auty came along with a typically sparkling innings of 65, hit in 50 minutes. Swinton finished with 211 for 5. Hepworth taking 2 for 45.
