Mr. D. S. Humphreys, of Mexborough, was this week re-elected President of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen.

The Directors of the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries, Ltd., have invited the officials of the Company to dinner at the Danum Hotel, Doncaster, on Saturday evening.

Mr. W. H. Melton, formerly manager of the Empire Theatre and the Royal Picture Palace, Mexborough, has purchased the Imperial Picture Palace, North Shore, Blackpool.
The local collieries are enjoying a boom at present, but, unfortunately, output is being interfered with by shortage of wagons and congestion of traffic.
The directors of Bullcroft Main Collieries, Ltd., have paid an interim dividend of 1s. per share, free of tax. This is the same as last year.
The Yorkshire Coal and Coke Trades Wage Representatives are to hold a dinner at the Danum Hotel, Doncaster, on January 12th, Mr. Charles Ramskir presiding.
The annual meeting of the Mexborough and Swinton Property Owners’ Association will be held next Thursday evening, January 10, at the Primitive Methodist Institute, Mexborough.
Steps are shortly to be taken to re-organise the Don Valley Conservative Association, and it is possible that the headquarters will be transferred from Doncaster to Mexborough.
The death has occurred this week, in his 90th year, of the Rev. S. Baring Gould, priest, poet, and novelist, author of “Onward Christian Soldiers” and other famous hymns.
Most South Yorkshire industrial stocks, and particularly collieries, are in brisk demand just now on the local share market.
The death occurred on Boxing Day of Mr. John Sopp, aged 60, of Romsey, Hants., formerly a mineral water manufacturer at Mexborough, and a member of the Mexborough Urban District Council.
Mr. R. Snow and Mr. T. L. Soar have been appointed a deputation from the Doncaster Rural Council to meet the Wath Urban Council to discuss the question of the supply of water to the parish of Adwick-on-Dearne.
The Rotherham Corporation have turned down a proposal of the Mexborough Committee to purchase a sufficient force of 2lb. mains, but have decided to install a wireless set at the Oakwood Sanatorium at a cost of £50.
The Mexborough water question continues to give considerable anxiety to the householders and also to the Urban Council, who are doing their utmost to solve this exceedingly difficult matter.

Under the extension of the Workmen’s Compensation Act, operating from January 1st, every employer of manual labour in any factory is required, under penalty, to provide a first aid outfit.
There will be a very strong contingent from Wath at the annual Ball of the Mexborough Cricket Club, which is to be held next Wednesday evening at the Mexborough Secondary School, and for which a large number of tickets have been issued.
The ballot of the miners on the question of terminating the present wages agreement in the coal industry will be taken on Jan. 16th, the papers to be returned on Jan. 14th. Youths under 21, of whom there are 75,000 out of a total membership of 850,000, will not be allowed to vote.
Bolckow-Vaughan and Company, Ltd., owners of extensive colliery workings in Durham, have purchased or leased, in conjunction with the Cortonwood Colliery Company, about 12,000 acres of coal between Pontefract and South Elmsall, and are proposing to sink at Upton, near South Elmsall.
Messrs. Vickers, Ltd., announce that a new company has recently been registered under the title of Vickers and International Combustion Engineering Ltd., for the manufacture of power plant equipment. The new company has an initial capital of £500,000, which is held by the two companies in equal proportions, and is the result of negotiations lasting several months between Vickers, Ltd., and the International Combustion Engineering Corporation of New York.
