Mr GL Machin
Licensee and a Former Cricketer

The death occurred on Monday of Mr George Leslie Machin (62) at his home, the old Masons Arms, Main Street, Mexborough. Mr Machin leaves a widow and three married children.

Mr Machin had been the licensee of the Old Masons Arms for about eight years, and had previously been the licensee of the Union Inn, Mexborough.

Kilnhurst born, Mr Machin was well known in Yorkshire Council cricket. He played for Kilnhurst in his earlier days and moving to Derbyshire played for Langley C.C.

Mr Mitchell was a fine wicket-keeper and gave good service to 3 local clubs, Wath, Swinton and Mexborough. He played in the Swinton Yorkshire Council team till about 1936, and then play for two seasons with Mexborough.

In 1942, Mr Mitchell became the licensee of the Union Inn Mexborough. Up to about two years ago he had been the vice president of the Mexborough Licence Victuallers Association. He was also an active member of the Yorkshire number two section of the Licensed Victuallers Defence League.

In the 19 4018 war, Mr Machin served with the R.A.and was wounded in Greece.

When his playing days were over, Mr Machin continued his cricketing corrections as groundsman of Mexborough Athletic C C. He was a member of Swinton Bridge WMC.

One of his daughters, Mrs Jesse Croft lives in Johannesburg South Africa. His other two children, Roy and Marion, both live in Mexborough. In 1944, Roy won the D.F.M.
