Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Wednesday 02 July 1919

Vicar’s Daughter’s Loan.

Edmund Lindsey (60), of no fixed abode, was charged at Rotherham West Riding Police Court, yesterday, with fraudulently obtaining a charitable contribution at Swinton on June 28th.

Defendant went to the vicarage at Swinton on Saturday night, and said he was an unqualified medical practitioner, and asked to see the vicar. As the vicar was not home, defendant saw the vicar’s daughter, and told her a very plausible tale. He stated that he required some assistance and asked for a loan of money. On his representations he was given 5s. by the vicar’s daughter, whom he told that he had a situation awaiting him.

From facts which came to the knowledge of the police, defendant was arrested by Detective Sergeant Shaw.

Lindsey was remanded for a week in order that further inquiries might be made concerning him.
