Canal Rescue

Ward Ernest Jackson (6), son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jackson, 68, William Street, Swinton, was rescued from drowning in the canal near the Swinton L.N.E.R. station on Sunday evening by Mr. Thomas Hannon (picture), a disabled ex-soldier, 13, Walker Street, Swinton.
Mr. Hannon was taking his child for a walk when he noticed two children on the canal bank and the boy Jackson in the water. He plunged into the water fully clothed and managed to grip the child when he was sinking. Handicapped by a paralyzed arm he had difficulty in getting the child to the bank, but succeeded. After artificial respiration had been applied the boy was little the worse
This is the second occasion on which Mr. Hannon has rescued a person from drowning. Several years ago, he rescued a miner at Bowbroom. Mr. Hannon served throughout the war in the 2nd York and Lancs. He was formerly an engine driver at Manvers Main but has been out of work for thirteen months.
