Wedding – Osborn & Whaley

October 1939

Mexborough and Swinton Times, October 7, 1939

Considerable interest was taken yesterday in the wedding, which was solemnised at St. John’s Church, Swinton, of Miss Elsie Osborn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Osborn, 7, Toll Bar Road, Swinton, and Mr. Martin Whaley, son of Mrs. J. Whaley and the late Mr J Whaley, of Station Road Bakery, Walkeringham.

The choral service was conducted by the Rev. A Edgar, of Mexborough. The hymns, “O, perfect love,” and “The voice that breathed o’er Eden,” were sung, with Mr. Joseph Beech, L.R.A.M., at the organ.

The bride, who wore a gown of cyclamen moire silk, with navy hat and shoes and gloves to tone, was given away by her father. Her bouquet comprised a sheaf of lilies and a string of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom, completed her toilette. She was attended by Miss Jessie Whaley, sister of the bridegroom, who was attired in a pink taffeta dress with hat, shoes and gloves to tone. Her bouquet was of carnations and fern.

The best man was Mr. Sydney Holt, and the groomsman Mr. H. H. Osborn.

At the reception, which was held in St. John’s Schoolroom, the bride’s mother received her guests in a two-piece suit of navy marocain with toning accessories. The bridegroom’s mother had chosen a mauve dress, black coat, trimmed with squirrel and accessories to tone. The honeymoon was postponed owing to the war, but for her going-away outfit the bride had a smart clover twopiece suit with navy accessories. The many presents included gifts from former pupils of the bride at Boston Schools, and an engraved silver tray from the Boston Amateur Operatic Society.
