Trained At Swinton
“Jockey Treble” was Town’s Second “Lincoln” Winner
Since Jockey Treble won the Lincoln handicap on Wednesday the winner’s trainer, Mr WH Smallwood, of the Kings head hotel, Swinton, has been receiving messages of congratulation from all over the country on his 100 to 1 winner.
Telegrams received include those sent by the Dowager Countess Fitzwilliam and the Earl of Wharncliffe.
Not First Win
This is not Mr Smallwood’s first Lincoln success. In 1939 Squadron Castle, owned by Mr SH Oxenham, a Doncaster bookmaker, who also owns Jockey Treble, was successful.
Mr Smallwood told a “South Yorkshire Times” reporter last that that he had submitted a lot of the success to a. Mercer, 18 year old lightweight jockey, was apprenticed Mr Jim Russell.
“On the day of the race,” Mr Smallwood said, “I thought the horse would have an outside chance, and he had had a months training at Blackpool since the Swinton racecourse was in a bad condition due to the bad weather.”
Some Win £200
Toasting the Winner
Mr Smallwood said he had not encouraged his customers at the Kings Head to bet on the horse, but some had invested £2 and would therefore have £200 to draw.
On Saturday Mr Smallwood will have Shanakill, owned by Mr RL Sainsbury, running in the Grand National, and taking into consideration the hazardous course he has decided that, like Jockey Treble, he has an outside chance.
