The Late Mrs. S. Osborne

The death occurred on Saturday at her home, Southbourne,” Station Road, Swinton, of Mrs. Sarah Osborne. She was 82.

For the past 60 or 70 years she had been actively interested in the social life of the town. With her husband, the late Mr. John Osborne, who died almost 20 years ago, she was a founder member of the now defunct Claremont Tennis Club at Swinton and remained a member throughout the club’s existence.

Mrs. Osborne retained her love of the sport in later years and gained prominence in the national Press when, at the age of over 70, she challenged her grand-daughter to a game, a challenge which was accepted. Mrs. Osborne was a native, and life-long resident of Swinton.

A noted social worker at all times she contributed, as a member of the W.V.S., many knitted comforts for the Forces. She gave up this work only when she was confined to bed a fortnight ago.

Often to be seen in the congregation of the Parish Church, Mrs Osborne attended as long as health permitting, rising to 10 Holy Communion, though unwell at the time, and the National Day of prayer in September. Mrs Osman leaves one daughter, Mrs Wilson Unett of Newcastle Staffs.

The funeral took place at Swinton on Wednesday.
