Mexborough and Swinton Times February 9 1918
The Last Man.
(By Miss Monica Steele, Swinton).
Alone he stood! His sword
He held above his head:
Still they came, still they fell,
But he, protected by the dead—
Fought on!
With never a thought for himself,
He struck and struck again:
For his was the side of the right,
And with disregard of the pain,
Fought on!
His arm was tired and limp,
His clothes were stained with gore;
Around him lay the deed,
But He, though wounded sore,
Fought on!
When help at last arrived,
They found him standing there
Oh ! what shall be the Crown
Of one who always hero,
Fought on?
