Swinton’s Oldest Resident

Congratulations to Mrs. Sarah Walker, Swinton’s oldest resident who attained the age of 91 on Wednesday. She is a native of Keadby and came to Swinton about 60 years ago with her husband, Mr. Sam Walker, who was a driver on the Great Central Railway until his death 28 years ago.

Both were on the original Montagu Hospital Committee and did much useful work for this institution.

Mrs. Walker is a life-long Primitive Methodist and, for the first time since she came to Swinton missed the Sunday School anniversary service a fortnight ago. In her old age, and particularly just now while she is confined indoors through a chill, her greatest solace is the wireless. A talk or dance music are equally acceptable, and vaudeville has a special appeal. Having all her faculties and a most remarkable memory, Mrs. Walker is an interesting conversationalist and is au fait with national as well as local affairs.

Mrs. Walker is not “old fashioned” in her ideas of modern young women and admires them for their change in modes of dress. Until two years ago, for several years she lived alone in William Street (where she has always lived since coming to Swinton) insisting that she was quite capable of looking after herself.

Now she lives with her only son, Mr. Fred Walker, in Rowms Lane; her only daughter is Mrs. J. Ford of Brookfield Avenue.
