94 Accidents Last Year

94 accidents occurred in Swinton Urban District during 1952. Three of them were fatal, 34 caused injuries, 25 caused no injury, and 32 involved dogs.

Four persons were killed during the year, six were seriously injured and 35 were slightly injured.

These figures are reported to the Swinton Road safety committee in accordance with the system adopted some months ago by the West riding County Constabulary.

Principal cause of the accidents were listed as follows:

1 Drivers and pedal cycles,

2 Crossings without due care at road junctions.

3 Proceeding at excessive speeds having regard to conditions.

4 Misjuding clearance distance or speed.

  1. Dogs in carriageway.

6 Weather, fog and frosty roads.

7 Overtaking improperly.

8 Pedestrians – stepping, walking or running off footpath ur verge into road, heedless of traffic.

Under the heading ” Accidents attributable to persons” were listed the following:

Motor vehicles other than motorcycles 16; Motorcycles 7; Pedal cycles 4; Pedestrians 14.

The highest number of accidents occurred on straight roads “T” or “Y” junctions and crossroads (control).
