Swinton Host 80

A small barrel of beer standing on a table in the tap room of the Gate Inn, Swinton on Wednesday told visitors that it was a special occasion.

For the “regulars” it was a case of drinks on the house.

For the landlord it is for the celebration of his 80th birthday. Mr George Raynor Liversidge, oldest licensee in the Mexborough and District Licensed Victuallers Association came to the Gate Inn, 21 years ago.

Since then the “house” has continued to prosper, and today is not only very popular figure with his “regulars,” we says all “good friends not just customers,” but with all and sundry who call at this hospitable “home from home.”

At 80, Mr. Liversidge looks no more than 65. An upright walker without the least sign of a stoop. he does all his own bar and cellar work at the Inn – no mean feat at the week-ends when the place is packed. When he became a landlord of the “Gate,” it was like returning home, for he was born locally and was miller White’s flour mills in Mexborough, later taken over by Barnsley British Cooperative Society. After 10 years as landlord of the Dolphin Hotel, Goldthorpe, near Scunthorpe, Mr Ltd decided to return to his native quarters and has been very happy since.

After being married 47 years, Mr Lewis’s lost his wife 10 years ago. He has one daughter living Mrs F.E.Werner. His father lived to be 85.
