Swinton Boy Catches Eye of West Brom. Scout

A choice of two brilliant careers is a problem facing a 16-years-old Mexborough Grammar School student. Terence Oldfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Oldfield, 14 Foxland Avenue, Swinton, is known at his school as a brilliant student and also as a brilliant footballer. Playing centre-half Terry has been consistent choice for Yorkshire Grammar Schools’ eleven since he was first chosen on December 5th and has played for them against Leeds University, Huddersfield Amateurs, Lancashire and Cheshire Grammar Schools, Durham Grammar Schools, Lincolnshire Grammar schools and Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicester Grammar Schools. Terry’s performance has been noticed further afield than Yorkshire, and he has been approached by a West Bromwich Albion talent scout who has informed him that his club would like Terry to visit West Bromwich for a trial.

No official date had been fixed but Terry was expecting that the date would be confirmed at the week-end. He has also been informed that Bolton Wanderers are interested in his services when he leaves school.

A sixth former at the Grammar School, Terry was transferred last summer from the Engineering Course at Mexborough Schofield Technical School where he gained eight subjects in the General Certificate of Education.  He is now studying at the Grammar School with a view to the Advanced G.C.E. examinations in 1961, and then hopes to attend university.
