Swinton Again Defeated

Hard-Hitting Enables Mexborough To Win

There were some “fireworks” in the annual Feast match between Mexboro’ and Swinton on Saturday. Swinton batted first, opening disastrously, Denton being caught by Burkinshaw of Day when only a single rim had been scored. Denton and Adey came together and the score steadily mounted to 52 before Denton, was caught by Williams. He had been previously missed at 4 by Brown. Then the keen Mexborough bowling and fielding took their toll until the seventh wicket, Adey throughout keeping his end up by sheer dogged play. Seven wickets were down for 83 when Pearson joined Adey. None of the other batsmen had been clean bowled with the exception of Stables, whose wicket fell to Ambler. The rest had been either caught or given out 1.b.w. Some bright hitting was seen between Alley and Pearson, who took the score to 135 before Adey was stumped by Searcliffe. He batted close 2 ¾  hours for 59. After 21 hours’ batting, Swinton were dismissed for 153.

Ambler took 4 wickets for 53 Day 3 for 35 and Broadhead 2 for 14.

Mexboro’s innings opening quietly, Burkinshaw and Broadhead facing the bowling of Denton and Pearson. Runs carne slowly and only 21 were on the score-board when Broadhead was clean bowled by Denton. Matters went to the wrong way for Mexboro’ until 5 wickets were down at 62 and Swinton were given a fair chance of forcing a victory. However, they slackened their grip in fielding, anti when Brook and Brown came together some merry hitting was seen. Brook sent the ball twice out of the field for 6, and had four boundaries in his 35, Brown scored steadily and in totalling 39 not out made his biggest score of the season. For the loss of 7 wickets, and with only three total.

A notable feature of the match was the fielding of Goddard and stables, the latter by two pick throwing is unable meeting to run out Ambler and Carl.

It was unfortunate for Swinton that they were defeated, but Mexborough fully deserved the victory stop they fought hard against their nearest rivals.
