Wardle’s Effort Fails To Save Denaby

An unavailing fight by J. H. Wardle to save Denaby from defeat at Swinton on Saturday was one of the features of the game. Swinton batted first, and good bowling by J. H Wardle dismissed them for 112. Wardle taking 6 wickets for 28 runs. For Swinton, H. Parkin (29 not out), A. Vickers (27) and G. Barnett (24), were top scorers.
Denaby fared badly against the bowling of F. Ellis and the first five wickets were down with only 27 on the board. Cory and Wardle took the score to 40 before Ellis had Cory caught by Vickers. The last wicket fell at 78, R. Cory making 15, J. H. Wardle 21 and G. Allen 10. F. Ellis and A. Vickers bowled unchanged, the former taking 8 for 25 and the latter 1 for 43.
Young Mexborough Batsman Shines
Mexborough 162 for 9 Rotherham Town 77
The main feature of the game at Mexborough on Saturday, where Mexborough easily beat Rotherham, was a grand innings by a Mexborough Secondary schoolboy, G. Ingham, who was second highest scorer with 37. He had made 75 not out for the school in the morning; Mexboro’ put on 162 for nine wickets. C. E. Bayes with an injured hand could not bat, C. Wilkinson and E. Plummer put on 31 for the first wicket when Plummer was dismissed for 13. He was followed by L. Dawson who, with Wilkinson took the score to 72 for two. C. Wilkinson played a fine innings for 43 (two sixes and four fours). Ingham came in seventh wicket down and stayed to the end, helping the total from 125 for seven, to 162 for 9. For Rotherham, Root took 3 for 32, Morton 4 for 48 and Winder 2 for 45.
Rotherham fared badly, S. Padley taking the first wicket, with only one run on the board. For the third wicket Grogut and Halmshaw put on 30, but the remainder put up a poor show and the side were all out for 77. Grogut, the opening batsman, was Rotherham’s top scorer with 29, followed by Halmshaw (17), and Nellist (11. For Mexborough, J. Mullen got 7 for 34, Padley taking 1 for 21, and C. E. Bayes 1 for 12.
