Swift Bridge Building
With remarkable swiftness the old bridge which carried the L.N.E.R. line over the canal north of Swinton station was replaced by a new girder bridge, weighing a hundred tons, last Sunday morning.
The new bridge had been assembled and constructed on temporary piles driven into the bed of the canal and when all was ready the old bridge was cut away and removed and the new bridge hauled by winches over rollers and fitted exactly into position.
The work was begun shortly after midnight on Saturday and was expected to be completed by five o’clock on Sunday afternoon but the new bridge was actually in position at 8.30 a.m. and the track was resorted and the line re-opened by 5 p.m. This smart engineering operation goes to the credit of a Middlesborough firm Tees-side Bridge and Engineering Company Ltd and their staff.
The photograph was taken shortly after the new bridge had been slotted into position.
