Street Betting
Spotted From Police Car
What the police saw from a motor car at Rowms Lane, Swinton, on May 14th, was stated in evidence against Arthur Lambert, 32, steel worker, of 6, Market Street, Swinton who was summoned at Rotherham West Riding Police Court on Monday for street betting.
P.c. Coates said at 12. p.m. he was in plain clothes with Inspector Holey and P. Sergt. Downhill in a motor car in Rowms Lane, having a full view of the lane and Market Street. Witness saw Lambert come along Market Street and stand for a short time in Rowms Lane, where a man went up to him and gave him something which he put into his pocket. Lambert then motioned to a man in Walker Row who came across to him and gave him something. When Lambert came towards the car, witness told him he was about to apprehend him for street betting. Lambert took three slips from his trousers pocket and said “These are all I have taken.” When charged Lambert said, “It is the first time and the last.”
The magistrates, Mr. S. C. Ward (presiding) and Mr. Lake and Mr. Popplewell, fined Lambert 40/-
