Soldier – Wooding, Samuel – Killed by Beams

September 1916

Mexborough and Swinton Times, September 23, 1916

Driver Samuel Wooding (Royal Navy Division, Engineers),

of Roman Terrace, Swinton was killed on August 8. He was 23 years of age, and before enlistment was employed at the Phoenix Glass Bottle Works, Mexborough.

His mother, Mrs E Wooding of Bluck’s buildings, Wath Road, Swinton has received the following letter from her son’s captain:

“The very sad news of your son’s accidental death no doubt by now has reached you, but I feel I should like to write you as representing the company to which he was attached to say how exceedingly sorry we all are, how much we sympathise with you.

Your son was a very good soldier, and greatly liked by all his companions. He was willing and a good worker, always to be found when wanted. The accident that caused his death was a very simple one – he said came in contact with the beams supporting the roof under which he was driving, and death took place immediately. His attention must have been attracted from the beam. I think the wagon jolted, and he looked round to see what was the matter.”
