Soldier – Vickers, Leonard – Died of Wounds in Great Advance

Private Leonard Vickers
(York & Lancs)

Private Vickers, who lived at SWinton for several years and was employed at Manvers Main and Wath Main up to joining the York and Lancaster Regiment in November 1914, went to France in August 1915, and was severely wounded in the present offensive.

He was brough to King Georges Hospial, London, on July 9th, where he was seen by friends on July 10 and 11, cheerful as always, and bearing his pain most bravely.

He fied on Tuesday, July 11, and was buruied with military honours at Nunhead Cemetery, London, on July 14th.

Note:

The 8th Battalion York and Lancs Regiment was part of III Corps. They were the leading Battalion, left of the 70th Brigade, in the attack near Ovilliers.

The Battalion as it went over the parapet numbered 680 NCO’s and men and 23 officers.

Of these only 68 men returned
