Soldier – Schofield, Matthew – Killed in Action

February 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times February 2, 1918

Gunner Matthew Schofield
Royal Field Artillery

Gunner Schofield of 5, Story St., Queen St., Swinton, was killed in action on January 8. His sister has, received a message of sympathy from Sec.-Lt. Cln. Brailsford. stating: —

” Your brother was a man I thought a great deal of in my section, and I gauged him to be a manly fellow in every way. I am sure his mates share my opinion. His death must have been painless, for a fragment of Shell struck him near the heart. He fell back, saying ‘I’m hit,’ and a few minutes after he had passed away.

His comrades are, going out to bury him this afternoon at a dressing station quite near.”
