Private E Salkeld
(York and Lancaster)
Mr and Mrs Salkeld of 42 Highwood Rd, Wath Road, received the following letter from the captain and adjutant of their sons company:
“It is my painful duty to inform you that your son, Private Edgar Salkeld, is reported missing from April 9. Should we at any future time receive any news of him the same will be forwarded accordingly. You have the united sympathy of the officers and other ranks of the Battalion in this, your suspense.”
Edgar Salkeld enlisted in October 1915, and is a son of Mr Vernon Salkeld, foreman Joiner at Manvers main. He was formerly in the Queen’s Own Yorkshire dragoons, but was later attached to York and Lancaster Regiment.
He went to France on Christmas Eve. An elder brother (James) was taken prisoner on the Somme, and died shortly afterwards of wounds.”
