Swinton Soldier’s Promotion
A Swinton soldier thanks us for publishing photographs of men serving in H.M. Forces. “I receive the paper from my wife every week,” he writes, “and I always look forward to seeing some of the men whom I have served with.”
He is C.S.M.I. S. Phillips, son of Mr. Robert Phillips, of 1, Hatherley Road, Queen Street, Swinton, and before he joined the Army he worked at Manvers Main Colliery. He joined up in 1935, enlisting in the Ist Batt. York and Lancaster Regiment.
In 1936 he served with them in Egypt and Palestine, and after arriving hack in England as a Lance/Corporal was sent on a physical training course, , and afterwards took another course and is now on the Army physical training staff. He was instructor in July, 1939, and has just been promoted Warrant Officer Class 2, Company Sergeant-Major Instructor.
“I am very keen on my job,” he writes. He married a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cocking, of 6, Wragby Row, Wath Road, Mexborough, and they have a son born last December.
