Soldier – Oliver, Edgar – Buckingham Palace for Military Cross

September 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times September 28, 1918

Second Lieutenant Edgar Oliver
Machine Gun Corps

At an investiture at Buckingham Palace last Friday, the King decorated second Lieutenant Edgar Oliver of Wortley Ave, Swinton, with the Military Cross in one during the German offensive from Saint Quentin last March.

It will be remembered that when the company commander and second in command were wounded, second Lieutenant Oliver assumed command, visited all the guns, arranged ammunition supply, and reorganised everything.

During a withdrawal he collected all available men, and fought as a rearguard until the next position was reached.

By his courage and cheerfulness he set a fine example to the men.
