Sapper Metcalfe, 10 Helen St, Shipley, formerly of Queen St, Swinton, has been awarded the Military Medal for bravery and devotion to duty.

He repaired telephone wires on heavy shellfire on April 9.

He has been serving three years in France. Before enlistment he was employed at Manvers Main. He is single aged 23.

He was formally identified with the Manvers Park Football Club.
