Soldier – Law, Ernest – Killed in Action

June 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times June 9, 1917

Private Ernest Law
York and Lancaster

32 Wortley Ave, Swinton, was recently killed in action in France. His mother has received the following letter from Captain J C Barlow:

“I regret very much that my previous letter to you telling you of the death of your son has apparently gone astray. He was killed on the night of April 24 after sticking to his post for some considerable time throughout a heavy bombardment.

His loss will be terribly hard for you to bear, because I’m sure he was as good a son as he was a soldier. He had been with me for over 12 months, and I can assure you we all felt we had lost one of our very best.

Please accept the sympathy of all the officers, NCOs and men of the company.”

From C.W.G.C.:

Private 15084

‘C’ Company the 8th Battalion the York and Lancaster Regiment.

Son of Annie Stanley, (formerly Law), of 32 Wortley Avenue, Swinton, Rotherham, Yorkshire, and the late George Law.

Died aged 24 on the 24th of April 1917.

Buried at the Railway Dugouts Burial ground, grave VII. E. 23.
