French Honour for Swinton Gunner

Gunner Henry Lambert (R.F.A), youngest son of Mr Mrs E Lambert, 37, white Lee Road, Swinton, has been awarded the Croix de Guerre for gallantry on July 1, 1916, in liaison with French infantry.

He sent back messages from captured German trenches, and when communications failed, came back through heavy shell and machine-gun fire to report to Brigade headquarters.

He assisted many wounded to get cover.

Gunner Lambert enlisted in August 1914 and went to France in January 1915.

He is 22 years of age, and before enlistment was employed at the locomotive sheds (G.C.) Mexborough.

An elder brother, Ernest, has been missing since July 1916
