Mexborough and Swinton Times November 30, 1918
Lance Corporal Albert Jones
Durham Light Infantry
Lance Corporal Albert Joan, 50, Queen Street, Swinton, was killed in action in France on October 25.
He was 19 years of age and enlisted in August 1917. He had been in France seven weeks when he fell.
Lieutenant G A Bain writes:
“I am sure his loss will be deeply felt by all of us, as he was not only 19, but a loyal and selfish comrades, and would soon be promoted.”
His former employer Mr Stephen L Pettitt, Holm Leigh, Buxton writes:
“I cannot possibly describe to you the great grief I feel for Albert’s death. I have lost a number of great friends in this awful wall, but I feel Albert’s death as keenly as any.
He was a faithful boy to me, and there was more between us than is usual between master and man I felt that he was a real friend, and I knew that each of us would have done much for the other.”
