Swinton Sergeant Among the Honours
Sgt Eric Daykin, or Swinton who receives a DCM for patrol work, has received the following letter, which recommends him for another honour, the Military Medal:
“On the night, 17/18 June 1916, near Aveley, this NCO was one of a patrol which was attacked by a strong enemy patrol. Many bombs were thrown by both sides, and eventually, after one man had been killed and every other man of the remainder of the patrol had been wounded – some severely – the hostile patrol was dispersed.
Although wounded in the back, Sgt Daykin returned to our trenches with a wounded man, before his own wound was dressed and went out again three times and assisted in bringing in the remainder of the patrol. His gallant conduct and contempt of danger was conspicuous throughout the affair.
This NCO is being repeatedly brought to notice the gallant conduct, and has already been recommended for the Military Medal, on the 6th inst.”
