Snapshot
Bernard Meggitt
Opening batsman for Swinton’s Doncaster League side, Bernard Meggitt is idol of the younger members of both teams and supporters, for his pleasant manner and “easy to know” approach to newcomers make them feel at ease immediately. His appearance in ” Snapshot ” will give pleasure to both footballers and cricketers alike, for besides being a useful bat he is secretary of Swinton Athletic Club F.C.
Although Bernard has played in both Yorkshire Council and Doncaster League cricket he much prefers Sunday friendly matches and enjoys himself immensely when he captains Swinton F.C.’s cricket eleven which he describes as “good, and still unbeaten.”
Joining Swinton when 15, he played in the Yorkshire Council side for a long time. but preferred the second eleven. He has been a regular player for one team or the other since then, except for a period of five years when he was with Wath. He rejoined Swinton at the commencement of this season. While at Wath he won the second team batting average for three years in succession. He is also a useful change bowler.
His best performance this season was against Magnet Athletic, when, after being injured, he made 52 not out to give his team one of their few victories this season. Bernard considers Swinton’s football team to be very good and tips them for a good run in the Rawmarsh Minor League this season. He was satisfied with their performance last season, and thinks they will do even better now.
Back to cricket, for his opinion on the youngsters of to-day. “I think Terence Stables and Keith Colton are two of the best batsmen in the district,” he says, “and they will improve with experience.” Bernard is now 37 years of age. He is married, and his home is at 2. King Street, Swinton.
