Scholar’s Success

For nine years a pupil at Mexborough Secondary school, Mr. Trevor T. Smith, has been successful in passing the first part of the Modern and Mediaeval Languages Tripos which he took at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in June.

Mr. Smith began his education at Adwick Road School and was awarded a County Minor    Scholarship to Mexborough Secondary school in 1929. There, he was a prefect for three years, and head prefect for one year. He matriculated in 1934 gaining a distinction in French, and in 1936 he passed the Higher School Certificate examination. In 1937 he was awarded a County Major Scholarship and then obtained exhibition standard at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in December, 1937, and entered the college in October of last year.

In June he took the Modern and Mediaeval Languages Tripos and was placed in class 1 for French, and class two division 1 for Latin. He was the only person taking the Latin tripos to be placed in class two division one, there being no first classes in this section. The governing body of the college have elected Mr. Smith to an exhibition as a result of this achievement.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. smith, of “Coronel,” Racecourse Bond, Swinton.
