South Yorkshire Times – Saturday 23 May 1942
Survivor from H.M.S. Lively.
Official intimation of their son’s safety was received by Mr and Mrs G. Mason, of 20, Walker Str Swinton, on Saturday, when a telegram from the Admiralty arrived half-an hour before cablegram from their son himself.
Bill Mason had been serving for over a year in the Navy, and was on this destroyer for eleven months, during which time had experienced many skirmishes in the Mediterranean.
His pal Fred Nuttall, of 30, Walk Street, was in an accompanying destroyer which luckily was not sunk, but no news has reached home of his whereabouts.
