The First Laurel

Petty Office Arthur Jones

of Piccadilly, Swinton, was the first man in this district to obtain a declaration. He was attached to the ill-fated battleship Ocean, subsequently mined and sunk in the Dardanelles.
The capture of the Ocean relates Jones exploits (by which he wonder conspicuous gallantry medal) in the following terms:

“At the Battle of Quernah, December 7, 1914, where he was wounded, he behaved in a very fine manner, keeping the engine of the armed launch going after she had been hit in the engine room, and in danger of sinking. This she did after being badly wounded in the head and back, thereby saving the vessel.”
