Rockingham China Plaque
Rotherham Firm’s Valuable Specimen

Mr W Mason, of J Mason (Rotherham) Ltd, High Street, Rotherham has at present in his collection a China plaque made at the Rockingham works, Swinton in 1834, which is considered to be one of the finest piece of pottery turned out by the firm.

On the front is a painting in colour, by G Speak, of a picture by van Dyck of the Earl of Strafford dictating to his secretary his defence shortly before his trial.

The plaque was offered at a sale at York over 30 years ago and Mr Mason tried to buy it, but did not succeed.

From that time Mr Mason lost touch with it, but was able to bite recently at a sale in the south of England.
