Retirement
After 48 years service with Swinton Urban District Council, Mr Frank Jones of “Lynngarth,” Station Street, Swinton is to retire in March 31.
Mr George came to Swinton in July 1899 and succeeded the late Mr EJ Turner as general collecter to the Council, and in 1913 was appointed assistant overseer of the poor.
Before coming to Swinton, Mr Jones was with Mr GF Barras, solicitor and was Clerk to Rotherham Guardians, the Rural Sanitary Authority and the Rotherham Assessment Committee for eight years.
In 1897 he was appointed deputy registrar of births and deaths for the South East subdistrict of Rotherham, and in 1898 was appointed deputy superintendent registrar of births, deaths and marriages for the whole of the Rotherham registration district.
Mr John was appointed Rating and Valuation Office to Swinton Council in 1925.
He has had a long association with the Swinton section of the special Constabulary dating back to 1915. 10 years later he was appointed section commander and still holds this position.
Mr Jones holds the Police Long Service Medal with four bars, and is also the holder of the King George Silver Jubilee medal and certificate.
1921 he organised the Armistice Sunday parade and service and as Marshall this each year since.
A founder member of the Rockingham Lodge of Freemasons, of which he was almoner for many years, Mr George is also a member of Swinton Road Safety Committee.
