At Mexborough Railway Exhibition
To Attend Queen
Choice from Local Schools
Eleven years old Gwennie Lines, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Lines, of 21. Fitzwilliam Street. Swinton. is to represent about 950 Swinton schoolchildren in the retinue of the British Railway Queen when she pays a three days’ visit to Mexborough for the local Railway Exhibition from April 22nd to 24th.
Gwennie was chosen by her schoolmates at Swinton Fitzwilliam School, with another girl, as representatives of that school. The two other schools in Swinton, Queen Street and Swinton Bridge. also chose two girls to represent them, but in the ensuing draw Gwennie was successful. She is very excited at the honour. She has never had a similar honour, but has taken prizes in fancy dress competitions, and is well known as an elocutionist and soloist.
Kilnhurst’s choice is Joan Beal. She is 10, and is the daughter of Mr. A. Beal. and the late Mrs. Beal. She is a pupil at Kilnhurst Council School, and at present resides with her godmother, Mr. O. Allen. of 39, Charles Street, Kilnhurst. This is not the first time that Joan has received this distinction. She was a maid of honour to the Kilnhurst Coronation Queen, and she wonders how her new office will compare with it. Joan was very excited to receive a letter from the organising committee on Monday, and is determined to have a good time from April 22nd to 24th.
She was chosen in similar fashion to Swinton’s representative. Two nominees were sent from each Kilnhurst school and Joan was successful in the subsequent draw.
Other attendants are: Doreen Perry (11), of 32, High Street, Mexborough Eileen Osborne (10), of 5. Ruskin Avenue. Mexborough; Muriel Wood (10), of 5, Cemetery Road. Wath; Joan Leyland (11), 57. Wath Road, Brampton; and Marjorie Myers (who will present the queen with a bouquet). 10, Pear Tree Avenue, Thurnscoe.
