Railway Construction at Swinton

Two interesting photographs showing an important reconstruction which is going on at the LMS station at Swinton.

The upper photograph shows the bridge to the north of the station over the Dove and Dearne branch of the South Yorkshire Canal. This bridge has subsided to such an extent that empty barges have difficulty in passing under it, and it has been decided to raise it four an hour feet, and to take out the stone arch. The work is now in progress, and the bridge has already been raised about a foot. It is expected that the old operational take about 12 months, for work can only be done on Sundays. The signal box will be raised to the new level of the line.

The lower photograph shows the waiting rooms on the “fast” platform of the station. These have been jacked up two feet. The photograph shows half the waiting rooms already raised and the remainder are now being brought to the same level.
