P.W. Morley of Morley

A Swinton girl has made history by becoming the first policewoman to be stationed at Morley near Leeds. She is 27 years old Miss Mavis Morley, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs WF Morley, of 22, Bower Road, who is merely “P.W.25” when on duty.

She has not regretted her application for acceptance into the West Riding Constabulary, which was first made when she was in the woman’s Land Army, and after a 14 weeks course at Durham Police Training Centre she was stationed at Batley.

After months at Batley, Miss Morley was appropriately sent to Morley, where her duties include traffic control and patrolling.

Educated at Queen Street and Roman Terrace schools, she was in service for some time before being employed by Messrs Hadfield’s at their Sheffield and Swinton works.

When the Swinton works closed Miss Morley joined the land army, which he left in 1945.

She has been a policewoman since last September, like most of the others in the profession she is nearly 6 feet in height.

A non-smoker and teetotaller she is keenly interested in swimming, riding, cycling and most other outdoor sports.
