Obituary – Brears

Mr. George William Brears (61), licencee of the Butchers’ Arms, Swinton, died at his home last Thursday. Mr. Brears was well-known in Swinton, coming as licensee of the Traveller’s Rest, Milton Street, nine years ago, and moving five years ago to the Butchers’ Arms.

A native of Goole, Yorks., Mr. Brears was formerly in the mercantile marine and rose to be ships engineer. For many years, after a lengthy seafaring life, he was employed ashore by a shipping firm.

During the last war he served for three years with the Royal Engineers in France, becoming a casualty in a gas attack. He joined the Wardens Service and also performed fire-watching duties in this war.

He leaves a widow, one son, and two daughters.

The funeral took place at Swinton on Monday.
