New Rail Bridge.

First Portion Laid at Swinton.

The first portion has been erected of a new steel bridge which is to supplant an old brickarch bridge over the Dove and Dearne Canal, near Swinton Station.

The bridge carries the main line of the London Midland and Scottish Railway Company from Sheffield to Leeds. Made of mild steel built-up girders and floor plating, the new bridge has been constructed by Messrs- Markham arid Co., Ltd., Broad Oaks Works, Chesterfield.

The first portion of eight girders was placed in position on Sunday last under the supervision of the L.M.S. Company’s engineering officials. Mr. W. C. Macartney (managing director) was present on behalf of Messrs, Markham and Co. The girders, the total weight of which is 48 tons, were laid with the aid railway company’s 36-ton crane, the complete operation occupying from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon, and being carried out quite satisfactorily and without a hitch.

The second and final portion will be erected about five weeks time
