We understand that Mr GH Browne, acting engineer and manager of the Borough of Ilkeston Tramways and Electricity Department, has been appointed to succeed Mr P Priestley as engineer and manager of the Mexborough and Swinton tramways company, at a salary of £400 per annum.
Mr Brown received his technical training at the Wigan and Manchester Technical Institutions.
For writing a thesis on the “Conservation of our Coal Supplies” he was elected an Associate Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.
He served his mechanical engineering apprenticeship with the Garswoold Iron and Coal company, Wigan. Later he received an appointment at the Wigan Corporation Tramways and Electricity Works. After four years at Wigan, he was successful in obtaining an appointment at the Swindon Corporation Tramway and electricity works, remaining there for five years.
In September 1911, he was appointed Deputy Borough Electrical Engineer and Assistant Master of the Ilkeston Corporation Tramways and Electricity Department, and in October 1914, was appointed Acting Engineer and Manager of the same undertaking.
In all probability, Mr Brown will enter upon his new duties at Rawmarsh sometime during the month of June
