New Council Chairman.
Coun. George Ernest Palmer, of 28. Toll Bar Road, Swinton Council’s new chairman, has been a councillor for four years and a member of the West Riding County Council for about five years.
He was elected unopposed to the Central Ward of the Urban Council in 1937 to fill the vacancy caused by the departure of Mr. William Chappell.
A member of the Labour Party, Mr. Palmer is secretary of Manvers Main branch of the Yorkshire Mineworkers’ Association. He was elected to the County Council as Swinton’s representative in 1935 in place of Mr. G. Siddall when the latter was elevated to the aldermanic bench.
Coun. Palmer has been a member of Swinton Education Sub-Committee for two years and about a year ago was appointed chairman. He is an air raid warden.
