Mr. T. L. Curtis
The death occurred with tragic suddenness on Monday morning of Mr. Thomas L. Curtis at his home in Station Street, Swinton from meningitis.
He had been ill for about a fortnight, but only took to his bed four days before he died.
Mr. Curtis was a native of London but he spent nearly half his 46 years in Swinton, with the exception of the war. He came as assistant to the late Mr. John Jones, chemist, whose daughter, Miss Louise Jones, he married in 1921.
Before coming to Swinton he had an interesting and varied career. During the war he served with the Devonshire yeomanry in Gallipoli and Palestine, and finished in France (where he was wounded) with a commission in the Shropshire Light Infantry.
He was a very likeable man and generous to a degree. He had a wide knowledge of many subjects and a remarkably good memory. He had many hobbies. All classes of sport appealed to him, but none so much as boxing.
He was a former member of the Mexborough Rotary Club, and a keen supporter of the British Legion. He was an excellent golfer and a popular member of the Wath club. “Tommy” will be missed in his social circle. He had few relatives, but countless friends. Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Curtis, through her family’s long connection with the town, and who is greatly respected.
