Missing Note.
Swinton Girl’s Theft.
A twelve-year-old Swinton girl appeared at Rotherham West Riding Children’s Court on Tuesday, to answer a charge of having stolen a 10s. Treasury note from the house of a neighbour, Edith Amelia Booth, married, of 183, Ward Road, Roman Terrace, Swinton, on April 12.
Edith Amelia Booth said she placed a 10s. Treasury, note in her purse, which she put on a shelf at her home. She went to a neighbour’s house, and when she returned the Treasury note was missing.
P.c. Johnson said he heard of a schoolgirl spending money freely on chocolates, and he interviewed the girl at her home. She said, “I have not had the ten shilling note, sir.” When asked to account for the chocolates, she said, “I will tell you the truth: I did steal it. There is some money hidden on the railway embankment.” Witness accompanied the girl to the embankment, where 5s. 1 ½ d. was found.
The girl was bound over for 12 months and placed under the supervision of the probation officer.
