Miner’s Novel “Cheque.”
Fined at Rotherham For Fraud on Shopkeeper. John Hetherington (28), miner, Charles Street, Swinton, was at Rotherham yesterday fined £10 for having stolen fivepennyworth of fish and 14s. 7d. belonging to Thomas Moore, Ltd., fishmongers. Swinton, on October 4th.
Defendant, it was stated, offered in payment for fivepennyworth of fish a blue piece of paper bearing the name of bank. He described the paper as an American cheque for 15s and was given 14s. 7d. change. The paper was worthless.
At the police office he remarked: “Money is easy to get when you know how.”
Defendant’s explanation to the Court was that he had been drinking for five days. He had a glorious “booze.”
