Swinton’s 6-Wickets’ Win

Mexborough  80   Swinton  81 for 4

Swinton opened their programme with a six wickets’ win over Mexborough at Swinton on Saturday.

Mexborough were weakened by the absence of two players. The first four wickets put on 45 runs but the “tail” collapsed and the team was dismissed for 80. F. Ellis (5 for 32) and I. Ellison (5 for 46) bowled unchanged. Chief scorers for Mexborough were T. Hargreaves (21). A. Vickers (15). C. Lawton (13), and T. Leach (11).

W. B. Broadhead (14) and G. Barnett (15) made an opening stand of 34 for Swinton and E. Hind (15) and Broadhead added ten more runs for the second wicket before the latter was stumped by Holmes off Hargreaves. The next two wickets put on 17 runs, and S. Parkin (34 not out) and I. Ellison (9 not out) stayed together until Mexborough’s total was passed. A. Vickers took 2 for 24 and T. Hargraves 2 for 33 for Mexborough.

Big Third Wicket Stand

A third wicket stand of 139 by J. Hutchinson, who scored 92, including eleven fours and one six, and H. Riley (55, including fours), was a feature of  Hickleton’s 140 runs’ win over Doncaster at Thurnscoe, on Saturday.

Hickleton, who declared at 251 for six wickets, flogged the Doncaster bowling for over two hours, and other chief scorers were J. Routledge (27), C. Probert (21), and J. Riley (15 not out). Bridges took 3 for 25.

Doncaster’s opening pair, Rees and Charlton, pout on 44 for the first wicket before Rees was run out after making 27. Soon after, Charlton was dismissed, having scored 25. Bridges (17) was the only other player to offer any resistance to the Hickleton bowling and the Inning closed at 101. J. Riley. bowling unchanged, took 6 for 37.

Brodsworth’s Double

Wath Beaten Again

Brodsworth 85 for 2        Wath  84

Brodsworth completed the double over Wath by beating them by seven wickets in the return game at Woodlands. Wath scored only 84 (C Sage 15, J C Heaton 14, H Clarke 13. F Godfrey 12, B Meggitt 15 not out). The first three wickets fell for 27, the next two adding 38 runs, but the remaining batsmen fared badly. J. Vickers (2 for 0), H Seniscal (two for 14) and G Manson (two for 15) were Brodsworth’s best bowlers.

Brodsworth lost their first two wickets without a run being scored, but H Hart (54 not out) and E Mountford (19 not out) saw Wath’s total passed with ease. D. Fieldsend (Wath) took two for 23.

Capstick’s Unbeaten Century

Frickley v Denaby and Cadeby

Frickley opened their programme in rousing style with a smashing victory over Denaby at Westfield Lane. An unbeaten century by W Capstick pave the way to a big score and declaration by Frickley, who tumbled out their opponents for a paltry total, thanks to brilliant bowling by their new professional, D Shivers, and good work by Ernest Gower. Denaby tried six bowlers in a vain effort to dislodge Capstick, who hit a six and 14 fours. W MacDonald, a new player and a brief but hectic innings for his 27, for he smashed a ball on the pavilion roof when he hit a six. He also hit two fours. C Ogley (30) and A ward (21 not out) made useful contributions.

Frickley closings after two hours 20 minutes and dismissed their opponents in 90 minutes.

The fast bowling of Govier, and medium delivers of Shivers, who shared the attack unchanged, had Denaby in difficulties from the start. The biggest partnership was made by the closing pair, G.K. Bateson (11) and F Wathey (six not out) who added 15 before the former, after hitting two boundaries of Shivers had his stump uprooted by the Sheffielder. E Robinson (12) was the only other player to reach double figures. Shivers finished with six for 26 and go via at three for 23
