Mayor of Relston
Honour for Former Swintonian
Religious and Public Work

Swinton people will be interested to hear of the success of a native of the town, Alderman the Rev. Ernest J. Chappell, who has been elected Mayor of Helston, Cornwall.

Alderman Chappell was the son of the late Mr. William Chappell, who had the unique experience of holding a first-class mine manager’s certificate and of becoming secretary of the Yorkshire Miners’ Association almost from its inception.

The eldest son was the late Councillor Maurice Chappell, of Swinton.

Alderman Chappell’s earliest years were thus spent in an atmosphere of zealous trade unionism and that early radicalism which was the forerunner of the Labour Party.

Several years training in engineering shops in the Rotherham district gave him valuable insight into the hopes and aspirations of the working class.
