Wath Main Colliery Co. have declared an interim dividend of 3%.

In order to obtain funds for recreational and social welfare, the Swinton and Kilnhurst Army Cadet Corps are holding an Army Cadet Week commencing on Saturday week, November 4th.

Lord Halifax, British Ambassador to Washington, speaking at Philadelphia on Tuesday, said “when the fighting stops, we shall find ourselves under tests more searching in some ways, perhaps even than those of war.”

Miners throughout Britain started voting on Tuesday on the issue of the national union for all mine workers, for which the draft rules were confirmed at a special Mineworkers Federation conference in Nottingham last August.

The death, which occurred on Sunday, of Mr. John Sutton, a well-known Mexborough farmer, severs a family link with Mexborough which had existed since 1819 when an ancestor of Mr. Sutton first took the tenancy of Manor Farm.

Mr. Arnold Lewis, for the past nine and a half years district manager of the Royal Liver Friendly Society at Mexborough, has been appointed district manager for the society at Doncaster and takes up his new duties next month.

The Ministry of Fuel and Power announce that the maximum quantity of house and kitchen coal and coalite which may be supplied (except by licence from the local fuel overseer), during the three months November to January inclusive is one ton in the North of England, Wales and Scotland; maximum stock limit 25cwt.

Mexborough Branch of the British Legion are of the opinion that members of the Home Guard should be allowed to join the Legion as ordinary members and that the Legion’s charter should be amended to allow this. A resolution covering this point will be debated at the West Riding Conference of the Legion to be held at Doncaster on November 18th

The Safety in Mines Research Station at Sheffield Is to be considerably enlarged after the war and more suitable quarters for the laboratory work are to be provided, according to the Board’s annual report for 1943. For many years the station at Sheffield and one at Buxton, also to be reconstructed, have been responsible for research on safety in coal mines.

Mr John Baker, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Baker, of Herringthorpe Hall, Rotherham, has been elected chairman of the Yorkshire Association of the Institution of Engineers. Mr. John Baker is Managing Director of Messrs. Joseph Booth and Bros., of Rodley, and is a native of Swinton, where his parents formerly resided.

The Board of Trade are making special arrangements for extra toys in readiness for Christmas. The quota of supply of children’s indoor games and toys for registered manufacturers and wholesalers during the period ending January 31st next has been trebled, so that a large number of toys should reach the retail shops before Christmas. Toys are subject to price control. The maximum retail price that may be charged for any toy is £1 4s 5d.

Miss Constance Myra Lawrence of Swinton Has arrived in Buenos Aires on her way to Valparaiso Chile, where she is to marry Mr. Ronald Larrard Whimpenny, second son of Mr. J. Whimpenny, former under-manager at Denaby Main Colliery, and Mrs. Whimpenny, who now live at Maltby. Mr. Whimpenny, a chartered accountant, went to South America six years ago. Miss Lawrence was a member of the staff of the Doncaster Road Infant School, Mexborough.
